While Burma is a largely undeveloped corner of Southeast Asian, the eastern half of Shan State remains largely untouched by the outside world. Long the home to bandits, warlords and gunrunners, the area around Kengtung has only recently opened to foreign tourists wanting to stay more than a couple of days.
